Zarya stared into the dull light inside the building. She wasn’t completely confident entering was what she should be doing.

Will I come out? Alive?

As much as her life was difficult right now, she did have a strong desire to keep living and breathing. She didn’t want to be going to the afterlife just yet. She hoped the invite meant that there was nothing untoward regarding her life or wellbeing as she stepped inside.

Her eyes adjusted to the gray light, quickly taking in the surroundings she found herself in. Orbs of orange light moved around the space, darkening in color as if her presence had woken them. She quickly read the energy of the orbs to make sure that they weren’t ghosts—they weren’t. She was a little disappointed, they were usually ghosts traveling on their way to somewhere else, and she rather enjoyed speeding up their trip.

A majestic staircase stood in front of her, divided in two, and going to the left and right as it led to the next level. Her eyes followed the stairs, glimpsing the books neatly shelved on the next level.

A library? Her mind latched on to whatever details she picked up, trying to find clues to tell her more about this place and who was here.

A librarian? Her humor still shone through, even though she was a bubbling mixture of fear, anticipation, and curiosity. She exhaled slowly, using her breath to settle herself. This wasn’t a time to be distracted.

Zarya stepped cautiously further into the entrance, turning around, her arms bent slightly by her body. She was half in position, ready to defend herself if she needed to. There were doors at the back of the stairs, hard to see, but her eyes spied them quickly. The space was dark, and there was wood paneling on the lower section of the walls. Above, the walls were covered in peeling wallpaper—dark lines and swirls on what was once a burgundy color with a golden splatter. Old oil paintings of landscapes which she decided was typical to see in a place of knowledge. In a different situation, she might go up to the paintings and admire the brushstrokes and play on light and wonder who the artist was.

The orbs came closer to her. It was as if they were attracted to her. She felt like swatting them away like pesky flies.

Was she being watched? Or was the light a simple necessity in this dark entrance. The knots in her stomach tightened. It was possible. She could feel a touch of the coldness that reminded her of the ghost who had visited her yesterday. Her chest restricted at the thought.

Maybe I got it wrong? Her normally clear-thinking mind muddled, and she hated not being able to get a clear read on the energy in this place so she could be ready should she need to be.

She pushed some of her magical energy from her hands. A breath of golden light gently pushed away the orbs as if they were bubbles.
